When Sarah Denny embarked on the journey to revitalize traditional Mi’kmaw songs, with the permission of the Grand Council, she consulted with elder Michael Paul who shared a number of songs with her. Compare his version to hers to see how she made it her own.

Michael Paul was born in 1900 and was the son of Thomas Paul of Potlotek and Mary Susie Paul of Eskasoni. Michael Paul was a prayer leader and was well versed in Mi’kmaq prayers, hymns and traditional Mi’kmaw songs. He was known for singing the traditional Mi’kmaw song, I’ko.
Michael Paul died July 4, 1984.
